How old do I have to be to take my Washington learners permit exam?

To take the test for your Washington learners permit, you must be at least 15 ½ years old.

Who can take online drivers education in Washington?

As well, you will need to have a parent or legal guardian present, or have one sign a parental approval form to apply for your Washington learners permit.

What if I don’t pass the Washington learners permit test? How many times can I take the test?

You will need to pass your Washington learners permit test by answering 21 out of 25 questions correctly.  You can only take the exam once per week.  However, the Washington DOL will allow you to retake the exam as much as needed to pass.

So, when can I actually start driving?

You can begin as soon as you’ve received your Washington learners permit. Just remember that you MUST be accompanied by a licensed 21-year old Washington driver with 5 or more years of driving experience in your passenger seat at all times.

How long do I need to have my permit before I can get my Washington drivers license?

The Washington DOL requires you to be 16 to have a drivers license, so you will need to practice driving in Washington with your learners permit for six months before applying for a provisional drivers license.

Am I required to do behind the wheel training?

If you are under 18, you must complete a driver training course to get a provisional Washington drivers license. Part of this class will include behind-the-wheel training from a licensed Washington driving instructor.

How many hours of supervised driving do I have to have before I can get my drivers license?

In addition to Washington DOL behind-the-wheel training requirements, you must also accumulate 50 hours of driving practice, including 10 hours at night, with proper supervision. Your parents or legal guardian will need to sign off on these hours as you complete them, and you will have to submit a signed driving log to the Washington DOL when you apply for your drivers license.

Can my friends ride with me after I get my Washington learners permit?

You must be accompanied by a licensed driver with at least 5 years driving experience. If a proper supervisor is in your passenger seat, your friends can ride along.

Can my friends ride with me after I get my Washington drivers license?

For the first six months you hold your provisional Washington drivers license may not have any passengers under age 20 with the exception of family members. For the next 6 months, you may have no more than 3 passengers under age 20, with the exception of family members. After that, you are free to drive—safely—with your friends, unsupervised.

Can I drive alone if I only have a Washington learners permit?

No, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver with at least 5 years driving experience at all times.
