Online Driver Education and Licensing Procedures in North Dakota
Once you take the first step towards attaining your driver’s qualification and permit, the journey begins. Everybody knows that driving is a valuable skill but can also have some disastrous consequences. The state of North Dakota has developed and implemented a program for drivers under the age of 18 so they can learn and develop safe driving habits in the early formative years of their adult life. Below is a summary of some of the things young drivers need in order to obtain their driver’s license.
North Dakota School Learner’s Permit
If you are interested in joining this program, then you have to be at least 14 years of age. Only then do you qualify for the school learner’s permit in the state. While the permit is only valid for a period of three months, it can be renewed. This permit will allow you to drive a vehicle so long as there is an adult at least 21 years of age who is actively supervising you and sitting in the front passenger seat.
The North Dakota School Permit
After a period of about 2 months with the school learner’s permit, you may now apply for the school permit so long as you meet some conditions set by the state. First you have to pass an exam which will include a written part and a road test. This exam will be given to you by your course instructor. You will also need to have completed about 50 hours or more of driving practice under supervision. The school learner’s permit should be held at least two months and in good condition which means no citations or violations. Finally, you will be required to have completed a state approved driver’s learning course.
Learner’s Permit in North Dakota
At this stage, you will now be eligible to apply for a learner’s permit or LPD after you turn 15 years. Those already holding a school permit will not need to take the written test. The permit will be valid for a period of 1 year but is renewable.
Restrictions Placed on the Learner’s Permit
There are a couple of restrictions placed on the learner’s permit that you will receive at this stage. One is that you can only drive a motor vehicle in the presence of an adult, 21 years and above, who has a valid driver’s license. Both of you will definitely need to make use of your seat belts at all times.
The North Dakota Provisional Driver’s License
Once you have been in possession of the learner’s permit for a period of about 5 months with no more than 3 points accrued in that time, then you will be eligible to apply for the provisional driver’s license. However, you will still need to meet some set conditions. These conditions are that you complete a driver’s ed course approved by the state and have about 50 hours driving experience or practice hours that will include 10 hours of night driving. A certificate will be needed to prove this. Also, regarding the North Dakota online drivers education process, you will at this stage be required to pass a written and road test to qualify for this permit.
Restrictions will, however, still apply. For example, the law does not allow you to carry more than 1 passenger under the age of 19 years unless accompanied and supervised by a competent and qualified driver. Driving after midnight and before 5.00 am is also prohibited. The use of cell phones is also prohibited and all passengers in the car must buckle up. Once you turn 18 then you may apply for your full license without any of these restrictions provided you meet some of the requirements set by the state such as holding the provision license for a period of 12 months with no more than 3 infringement points.
