*The minimum age for a learner permit is 16, but you must pass an approved driver education course prior to applying.
*You must possess your learner’s permit for at least six months.
*Rhode Island can issue a driver’s license to individuals that are at least sixteen years, six months of age.
*You must pass a road test.
*Rhode Island requirements include fifty hours of supervised driving with an adult who is at least 21 years of age, has possessed a driver’s license for a minimum of five years, and has parental approval to supervise you. Ten of the fifty driving hours must occur at night, and these hours must be completed with a qualified supervising driver as well.
*You can drive unsupervised with your provisional license between 5am and 1am. Hours outside of these limits must occur with a qualified supervisor seated in the front passenger seat of your vehicle, and these guidelines refer to the first twelve months after your receive a provisional license. The exceptions include driving to or from work, or driving to participate in volunteer emergency, rescue, or fire squad activities.
*You are allowed to drive with one non-family member who is younger than 21, and all passengers are required to wear seat belts.
*Drivers under age 18 may not use text messaging devices or cell phones while they drive, and this includes hands free and handheld devices.
