The South Dakota Department of Public Safety ("DPS") requires you to be 14 years old before applying for your South Dakota learners permit.

Anyone can take online driver education classes through Driver Ed To Go! If you would like to take South Dakota online driver education courses to satisfy DPS requirements, you will need individual South Dakota DPS approval.

The South Dakota DPS requires you to present a certified birth certificate or passport, one additional form of identification and a signed parental approval form issued by the South Dakota DPS.

You will need to pass your learners permit written test to receive a South Dakota learners permit. The test is 25 questions long and you will need an 80% (20 correct responses) to pass. If you fail, just take the test again until you pass, though you may need to wait a day to try again.

When you receive your South Dakota learners permit, you will be able to start driving immediately. However, the South Dakota DPS mandates that you be accompanied at all times by an 18-year old licensed South Dakota driver with at least one year of driving experience in your passenger seat.

You will need to practice driving on your South Dakota learners permit for at least six months before you can apply for your South Dakota drivers license. However, if you are still under 16 when your six months has passed, you will only be eligible for a restricted movers permit. This will allow you to drive on your own between 6am and 10pm, but will require supervision after those hours, or if you have passengers in your car.

If you wish to obtain your South Dakota drivers license as quickly as possible, you will need to take a driver education course that includes behind-the-wheel training with a licensed South Dakota driving instructor. If you do, you can get your drivers license in as quickly as three months. If not, you must wait six months at a minimum.

South Dakota also requires you to perform forty practice hours of driving outside a classroom. These hours must be supervised by a family member or licensed South Dakota driver your parents or legal guardians approve of, who is over 18 and has one year of driving experience. Also, you must perform ten of these practice driving hours after sundown.

In South Dakota, there are no restrictions on driving with passengers in the vehicle if you have an instruction (learners') permit.   However, you MUST drive with an 18-yr-old licensed driver between the hours of 6am and 10pm, and a parent or guardian between the hours of 10pm and 6am, riding in the front passenger seat.

In South Dakota, there are no restrictions on driving with passengers in the vehicle whether you have an instruction (learners' permit), a restricted minor's permit, or an operator's license.  However, with an instruction (learners') permit or a restricted minor's permit, there are rules insofar as having a parent/guardian and/or a licensed 18-yr-old driver riding next to you in the front passenger's seat.

You can never drive on a South Dakota instruction (learners') permit without a licensed adult driver supervising you from the passenger seat (and from 10am to 6pm, the licensed adult driver must be your parent or guardian).  

If you receive a restricted minor's permit, you can only drive alone between 6am and 10pm.
